INSURANCE OPTIONS AND TIMING
In surrogacy, the surrogate’s insurance primarily covers the costs of her pregnancy and delivery, while the intended parent’s insurance typically covers the newborn’s medical care. The surrogate’s insurance will cover her medical expenses, including prenatal care, labor, and delivery. Once the baby is born, the intended parents are legally responsible for the child’s medical expenses, and the child would be covered under their health insurance plan.
For surrogacy insurance, open enrollment generally begins on November 1st and ends on January 15th in most states. If you enroll between November 1st and December 15th, coverage typically starts on January 1st of the following year. Enrolling between December 16th and January 15th means coverage starts on February 1st.
Some states, like Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont, New York, and Connecticut, as summarized in the table below consider pregnancy a qualifying life event, which can allow for enrollment outside of the open enrollment period.
The list below of states allow pregnancy as a qualifying life event (i.e. Allows for an ACA policy outside of open enrollment.) I also attached underwriting criteria for the Sleep Easy policy as well!
