How Long Does Surrogacy Take? A Step-by-Step Timeline

Every surrogacy journey is unique — but most follow a predictable rhythm of preparation, patience, and joy. At Surrogacy4All, we outline the process clearly so you know exactly what to expect from start to finish.

Step 1 – Consultation & Application (Month 1)

The first stage begins with hope — your consultation. After an initial call, you’ll complete your application, medical history forms, and personal profiles.

We match intended parents and surrogates carefully, ensuring strong compatibility and shared expectations.

Step 2 – Medical & Psychological Screening (Months 2–3)

Once matched, both parties undergo medical testing, fertility assessments, and counseling sessions. The surrogate’s uterine health and hormone levels are checked; the intended mother’s or egg donor’s eggs are tested for viability.

Learn more about this phase at Surrogacy4All Fertility.

Step 3 – Legal Agreements (Month 4)

After medical approval, lawyers draft the surrogacy contracts. Both surrogate and parents receive independent legal advice. Contracts ensure everyone understands their rights, responsibilities, and financial terms.

Step 4 – Embryo Transfer & Pregnancy (Months 5–6)

This is where science and hope merge. Fertility specialists perform the embryo transfer, followed by pregnancy confirmation. Most surrogates conceive within the first or second attempt.

Pregnancy lasts 9 months — but emotional preparation happens long before delivery.

Step 5 – Birth & Postpartum Support (Months 12–15)

Your baby arrives! The legal parentage order is finalized, and the surrogate begins her recovery period. Our team provides postnatal care, emotional support, and guidance for parents adjusting to their new roles.

Quick Overview:

Stage Duration Key Steps
Application 1 Month Consultation, profiles
Screening 2–3 Months Medical and psych eval
Legal 1 Month Contract finalization
Transfer & Pregnancy 6–9 Months Embryo to delivery
Post-Birth 1–2 Months Legal orders, bonding
