Donor age strongly influences embryo quality, while recipient age influences uterine receptivity.
Illustration: Donor Age vs Blastocyst Development Rate
The chart below visually demonstrates how blastocyst-development rates decline with increasing egg age.
Why Egg Age Matters
Egg age is one of the strongest predictors of blastocyst development. As eggs age, chromosomal abnormalities become more common, mitochondrial function slows, and embryo division becomes less predictable.
This explains why donor programs typically recruit donors under 30. As a rule of thumb, if you start with 12 M2 quality eggs from a donor under the age of 29, you can expect 6 embryos and 50% of these or 3 should become Day 5 Blastocysts. This is subject to note below and assumes the lab and the sperm are excellent quality also.

Heatmap: Donor Age × Recipient Age (Top-Quality Genetics)
The heatmap below shows a realistic but maximized implantation model for Day‑5 blastocysts. Younger donor eggs produce stronger embryos, while recipient age affects implantation even when embryo quality is excellent.
Interpretation
- Genetically screened donors (eggs + sperm) significantly increase implantation potential.
- Donor age remains the strongest determinant of embryo quality.
- Recipient uterine age continues to influence implantation probability, especially after age 44.
- Even with perfect genetics, implantation gradually decreases as uterine receptivity declines.
- This model represents the highest realistic outcomes, not guaranteed results.
