For couples trying to conceive, there’s often curiosity around whether certain sex positions can increase the chances of pregnancy. While there’s no scientific evidence to suggest that one position is superior to another for conception, there are some practical insights that may help you optimize your chances. Here’s what you need to know, along with some bedroom tips for maximizing the possibility of getting pregnant.

1. The Best Positions for Conception
While no position is scientifically proven to enhance conception rates, the missionary position (woman on bottom, man on top) is commonly suggested. This position may assist by placing sperm closer to the cervix.

Adding a pillow under the hips may help by using gravity to encourage sperm movement toward the cervix.

For women with a tilted uterus (one that tilts toward the spine instead of the belly button), the “doggy style” position (penetration from behind) may be beneficial for closer sperm placement to the cervix.

2. Does Position Actually Matter?
Despite the common advice, studies have shown that sex position doesn’t notably impact conception odds. Sperm are remarkably efficient swimmers, reaching the cervix within seconds of ejaculation, and can be found in the fallopian tubes within 15 minutes, where fertilization can occur.

The goal is to ensure sperm reach the cervix, which most standard positions accomplish effectively.

3. The Role of Orgasm and Enjoyment
While an orgasm doesn’t guarantee conception, some research suggests that sperm move closer to the cervix when a woman reaches orgasm. Though not scientifically proven, this factor could contribute slightly to the success of conception.

Given that conception might require multiple attempts, focusing on enjoyment and comfort is beneficial. Finding a position you like and feel relaxed in could help relieve stress and enhance the experience.

4. Tips on Lubricants and Post-Sex Routine
Many lubricants, and even saliva, can reduce sperm motility, so it’s recommended to avoid them when trying to conceive (TTC). If you prefer to use a lubricant, consider an FDA-approved, fertility-friendly option like Astroglide TTC, Conceive Plus, or Pre-Seed, which mimic cervical mucus and have sperm-friendly pH levels.

Staying horizontal after sex isn’t backed by science as a way to increase pregnancy odds, but some find that resting for about 15 minutes afterward can add peace of mind by minimizing gravity’s effect on sperm flow.

5. Patience Is Key
It’s important to remember that it can take up to 12 months for the average couple to conceive, so keeping things relaxed and fun can make the journey easier.
