Talk to the Surrogacy4All medical team

Your BMR, BMI and calorie estimates are general guides. They are not a diagnosis, a treatment plan or a decision about eligibility. Surrogacy4All is a physician-led agency, and our medical team can help you understand what these numbers may mean for your own journey, whether you are thinking about becoming a surrogate, preparing for IVF as an intended parent, or exploring egg donation.

Criteria such as BMI are set by the receiving fertility clinic, and its reproductive endocrinologist makes the final medical decision. Our team can help you prepare your questions and coordinate with your clinic and obstetric provider. Please do not start a restrictive diet or an intense exercise programme, or change any prescribed medicine, because of a calculator result. Speak with a qualified clinician first. If you are pregnant, have symptoms or have a medical concern, contact your own doctor, or emergency services if it is urgent.

Want to check your BMI on its own? Try our dedicated BMI calculator and bring the result to your next conversation with your doctor or our medical team.

What BMR Measures

Your basal metabolic rate is the energy your body uses at complete rest to keep everything running: breathing, circulating blood, regulating temperature, repairing cells and powering the brain. For many adults it makes up roughly 60 to 70 percent of the calories burned in a day. Movement, digestion and daily activity account for the rest. A basal metabolic rate calculator estimates this figure from your age, sex, height and weight, because those four factors track closely with how much body tissue you have to fuel.

How to Calculate BMR by Hand

To calculate basal metabolic rate, three equations are in common use. Anyone figuring BMR on paper needs weight in kilograms, height in centimetres and age in years.

Basal Metabolic Rate and BMI Calculator

Take a 30-year-old woman who weighs 65 kg and is 165 cm tall. The first equation gives 650 + 1,031 − 150 − 161, which is about 1,370 kcal per day.
Which one should you pick? The first has performed best in several validation studies of healthy adults, so it is the default in the tool. The revised Harris-Benedict tends to read a little higher for many people. Katch-McArdle suits lean or muscular people who know their body fat percentage.

BMR for Women and Men

People often look for a BMR calculator male or BMR calculator female option, but there is only one set of equations. Sex simply changes a constant in the formula. Anyone using a BMR calculator for women should remember that pregnancy and breastfeeding change energy needs in ways the standard formulas cannot capture. The tool therefore asks about pregnancy status and does not return calorie numbers if you are pregnant.

From BMR to Daily Calories

BMR is only the floor. Multiply it by an activity factor and you get an estimate of your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE), the calories you use across a whole day. Because the results table does this for five activity levels, the tool also works as a basal metabolic rate calorie calculator. Using the example above:

Activity Level Factor Calories per Day
Sedentary (little or no exercise) 1.2 About 1,644
Light (1–3 days a week) 1.375 About 1,884
Moderate (3–5 days a week) 1.55 About 2,124
Active (6–7 days a week) 1.725 About 2,364
Very active (hard exercise or physical job) 1.9 About 2,603
Many people treat the row that matches their routine as their maintenance calories, and it is a sensible starting point to work out your daily calorie needs. Be honest about activity, because it is easy to overestimate. If you want to gain or lose weight, speak with a doctor or registered dietitian first. Eating well below your BMR for long periods is generally not advised without supervision.

How Accurate is It?

A BMR calculator gives an estimate, not a measurement. No accurate BMR calculator can replace indirect calorimetry, the lab test that measures the oxygen you use at rest. For most healthy adults the standard equations land reasonably close, but individual results can still differ by a noticeable margin. Your BMR also moves as your weight, age and muscle change, so check BMR rate every few months or after any significant change in weight.

Using the BMR Side of The Tool

This online calculator for BMR converts units for you, so you can enter figures the way you already know them.

Sex and age

ages 18 to 90 are accepted.

Height

centimetres, or feet and inches.

Weight

kilograms, pounds, or stone and pounds.

Formula (optional)

open Advanced options to switch formulas. Choosing Katch-McArdle reveals a body fat field. Most people can leave the default alone.

Results

select Calculate to calculate BMR in both kilocalories and kilojoules, along with the five-row activity table.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding
a status option appears when Female is selected. Pregnant users get guidance instead of numbers, and breastfeeding users get a reminder that their needs are higher.

Reset: clears every field in one click.

Use it as a BMR rate calculator whenever your routine or body changes. People searching for ways to calculate my BMR usually want a quick answer, and the default settings give one in seconds.

As an online BMR calculator that runs in your browser, it does not store or send anything you enter. Input checks reject impossible values, such as a height of 3 cm, so a typing slip does not produce a misleading result.

Body Mass Index (BMI): How Your Weight Compares with Your Height

BMI Categories for Adults

The World Health Organization groups adult BMI into the BMI categories below. The healthy BMI range runs from 18.5 to 24.9.

BMI Category
Below 18.5 Underweight
18.5 – 24.9 Healthy weight
25 – 29.9 Overweight
30 – 34.9 Obesity, class 1
35 – 39.9 Obesity, class 2
40 and above Obesity, class 3
The scale bar under your result works like a BMI chart calculator. The marker shows where you sit between the bands, so you can see at a glance whether you are close to a boundary. Your value is shown to one decimal place next to its category, with a short plain-language note. Anyone relying on a BMI index calculator should also know that cut-offs are not identical worldwide. Some guidelines for Asian populations, including ones used in India, set lower thresholds, commonly 23 for overweight and 25 for obesity, because health risks can rise at lower BMI values. This tool uses the standard WHO bands.

BMI for Women and Men

The formula and adult cut-offs are the same for everyone, so a BMI calculator for females and a BMI calculator for men return the same category for the same height and weight. What differs is what the number hides: at the same BMI, women generally carry a higher percentage of body fat than men. A women’s BMI calculator also cannot account for pregnancy, when weight rises for healthy reasons.

If you choose Female in this tool, you can say whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding. That makes it a more sensible BMI calculator for female users than a plain height-and-weight form. If you select pregnant, no BMI is shown, because a reading based on current weight can mislead.

Where BMI Falls Short

Genuinely, BMI does not measure body fat. A muscular athlete and a person with little muscle can share the same BMI, and BMI also misses where fat is stored. A BMI estimator cannot separate those cases. It is also less reliable for older adults who have lost muscle and for people from different ethnic backgrounds. It is not meant for children and teenagers, whose results are read against age- and sex-specific growth charts. For a fuller picture, pair BMI with waist circumference, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol checks.

A determining BMI calculator is only as reliable as the numbers you feed it. Measure height without shoes and weigh yourself at a similar time of day. A correct BMI calculator should also reject impossible entries instead of quietly returning nonsense, and this one does.

Using the BMI Side of The Tool

Because a body BMI calculator only needs height and weight, there is little to fill in. You can use the tool as a BMI calculator online on a phone, tablet or desktop. Heights go in as centimetres or feet and inches, and weights as kilograms, pounds or stone and pounds.

FAQs About BMR & BMI

Most adults land somewhere between about 1,200 and 2,000 kcal per day, depending on size, age, sex and muscle mass. The tool gives you a personal estimate. That is why the question how many calories do I burn has no single answer.
No. Women and men use the same equations, with only a constant that changes. What matters for women is pregnancy and breastfeeding, which the tool handles separately.
Yes. There is no sign-up, and nothing you enter is saved.
Leave the default if you are unsure. Switch to Katch-McArdle only if you know your body fat percentage and are lean or muscular.
Eating far below your BMR for long periods can lead to muscle loss and nutrient gaps. Speak with a doctor or dietitian before cutting calories sharply.
Yes. Choose kilograms for weight and centimetres for height and the result appears instantly. Pounds, stone and feet-and-inches work just as well.
Muscle is denser than fat, so BMI can overstate body fat in muscular people. Look at waist size and other health markers alongside it
No. Children and teenagers are assessed on growth charts that compare them with others of the same age and sex. Ask your paediatrician.
The tool is built for adults who are not pregnant. If you select pregnant, it shows guidance and asks you to speak with your obstetric provider.
Both measurements are estimates for general education. They are not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. If you have a medical condition, take regular medication, are pregnant or are thinking about a major change to your diet or exercise, speak with a qualified healthcare professional first.
